Guidelines for Submitting Recommendations

The Audio Annex Recommended Recordings List is an ongoing project begun in response to the many audiophile recordings lists that tend to emphasize sonic qualities over musical merit. Our goal is to create a list of recordings that offer not only superb sound, but also great music. All registered Audio Annex members are encouraged to submit as many recommendations as they like for recordings that meet these criteria.

What kinds of recordings are eligible for submission?

Any recording, in print or not, that is at least as impressive in terms of musical quality as it is in terms of sound quality. (Note: If you are recommending a recording that is no longer in print, you should note that in the Description field of the submission form.)

What musical genres are allowed?

Anything at all that meets the above-mentioned criteria of outstanding recording and musical quality. When you submit your recommendations, you will have to determine which one of the following ten categories the recording falls into:

  • Classical (includes early music, opera, 20th century/modern compositions, etc.)
  • Jazz (all genres)
  • Rock (includes classic rock, pop, heavy metal, punk, electronica, etc.)
  • Reggae
  • Roots music (includes folk, Americana, country & western, etc.)
  • Soundtracks (and Scores)
  • R & B (Blues, Soul, Funk, Hip-Hop, etc)
  • World music (includes worldbeat and traditional ethnic music of non-western cultures)
  • Standards (includes show tunes, Tin Pan Alley pop, torch songs, etc.)
  • Other (includes anything that doesn’t fit into the categories above)

Can I include comments with my submission?

Yes! You are encouraged to add brief comments (totaling no more than 200 characters — approximately 40 words) to every submission.

What kind of comments are best to include?

Your comments should convey some simple but important information that will help readers decide whether they want to investigate further. For example, you could explain what you like about the recording, whether it's live or in studio, electric or acoustic, in print or out of print, and so on. Also, you could include other information like whether the specific title is a multiple LP or CD set, a promotional or limited edition pressing, if it’s accompanied by a bonus recording, etc.
